By the time the series ends, Carrie is still a young teen, and we never really meet her as a grown-up. Charles had a wandering foot in all his various incarnations. In real life, his family had long been farmers, moving several times while he was growing up in search of a better chance. Charles followed this same pattern with his own family after marrying Caroline Quiner, always in search of better financial opportunities, specifically a successful wheat farm. After many moves and attempts, with his family’s help, Charles proved up his homestead, but due to health issues, he retired from farming almost immediately afterward.
Gilbert didn’t stay squeamish about the opposite sex for long, dating a parade of teen heartthrobs including Rob Lowe, Tom Cruise, Scott Baio and even punk prince Billy Idol. From the moment it hit the airwaves in 1974, the TV adaptation of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s beloved Little House on the Prairie book series became must-see family viewing. Little girls begged for sun bonnets and prairie dresses, and big girls were busy making vintage-inspired Gunne Sax dresses for school dances and other formal affairs. The show proved a passion project for Michael Landon, who sought another surefire hit after rising to fame on the long-running Bonanza. Erstwhile theater actress Karen Grassle signed on as Caroline “Ma” Ingalls. And though Little House usually offered viewers comforting, familiar and often instructive entertainment, the series also boasted secrets and silliness, before and behind the camera.

The son of a prosperous farmer, Almanzo, wanted to build a successful farm of his own. Born in New York, Almanzo moved with his parents to southeastern Minnesota and then sought his own land further west. While in De Smet, he met and married Laura, and they began work towards their goal. They made one last fresh start in Mansfield, Missouri, and slowly were able to build a modestly successful farm.
However, Almanzo had been cheated and was forced to sell the land back, putting all hopes for a marriage off. Wanting to strike out on her own and see her brother happy, Eliza Jane lied and said she had gotten engaged so that she’d be able to move out, thus giving Laura and Almanzo the house. With the wedding now back on, Laura and Almanzo finally marry on her sister Mary’s wedding anniversary in a small ceremony in the blind school. The Ingalls family then traveled back north and settled on another farm near Walnut Grove, Minnesota. Mary and Laura soon had to attend school and were dubbed “country girls” by Nellie Oleson.
